Bicycle Patrol Unit

The bicycle patrol was instituted in 1994 as a way for the seasonal police officers to patrol while encouraging contact with the residents and visitors of the Town of Dewey Beach. Like the foot patrol officers, when weather permits, the bicycle officers go out on bicycles in town on patrol. The project was so successful that the police department's seasonal police officer supervisors can elect to take one of the 11 mountain bikes the department owns on patrol.  The mountain bike has proven itself successful in the patrol function in a variety of circumstances including fleeing criminal apprehensions; parking lot, business, and residential area patrol; crime prevention; and surveillance missions.  The department also has found during weekends and holidays, when traffic congestion can cause motor vehicular traffic to come to a standstill, the bicycle patrol can respond to a complaint much faster than a patrol car.
