Employment Opportunities

The Dewey Beach Police Department is accepting applications for the following positions unless otherwise noted:

Police Officer (Full Time) - * No Openings-Applications Not Accepted At This Time *

Minimum Qualifications - Be 21 years of age or older; possession of high school diploma or GED (college degree preferred); be a United States of America citizen; possess a valid drivers license; pass drug screening / test; not have received a bad conduct or dishonorable discharge, if he or she served in the armed forces; applicants must pass an interview and background investigation which includes, but is not limited to: driving record, criminal record check, financial/credit history and employment history; successfully complete a medical, fitness and psychological examination.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Good judgment and general intelligence; good powers of observation and memory; proficiency in the use of firearms; demonstrated proficiency to safely operate a vehicle on the road in emergency situations at high speed and under normal conditions; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; good knowledge of first aid methods; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; ability to operate a desktop or mobile data terminal and other related equipment during the course of their work; successful recruits will attend an approved police academy for basic training.

General Duties - Enforces State laws and Town ordinances; executes warrants; operates patrol car or prisoner transport van; checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect suspicious conditions; provide assistance to motorist whose vehicles are broken down or stranded; transports prisoners to specified destinations; investigates complaints; makes arrests of persons who violate laws and ordinances; operates radar unit for speed enforcement; directs traffic; issue tickets or warnings to those who violate traffic laws; responds to fires or accidents and renders all possible assistance; prepares necessary reports from investigations made; appears in court to testify; and enforces Town and State laws pertaining to juvenile offenders.


APPLICATIONS FOR SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT ARE ACCEPTED

DECEMBER 15 - APRIL 15 ONLY.

During the summer months the Dewey Beach Police Department hires approximately 35 seasonal employees to supplement the full time force. Seasonal personnel receive training, certifications and uniforms for their respective positions. Students should inquire about receiving college credits for their employment as seasonal personnel.

Seasonal Police Officer

Seasonal Parking Enforcement Officer

Minimum Qualifications - Be 18 years of age or older; possession of a high school diploma or GED (college preferred); be a United States of America citizen; possess a valid driver's license; pass drug screening/test; applicants must pass an interview and background investigation which include, but are not limited to: driving record history, and criminal record check.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Good judgment and general intelligence; good powers of observation and memory; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; ability to operate a desktop or mobile data terminal and other related equipment during the course of their work.

General Duties - Enforces State parking laws and Town ordinances; investigates complaints; directs traffic; issue tickets or warnings to those who violate parking laws; and appears in court to testify. Parking enforcement officers trained and sworn as seasonal police officers and assist regular patrol units as required

Seasonal Dispatcher

Minimum Qualifications - Be 18 years of age or older; possession of a high school diploma or GED (college preferred); be a United States of America citizen; possess a valid driver's license; pass drug screening/test; applicants must pass an interview and background investigation which include, but are not limited to: driving record history, and criminal record check.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Good judgment and general intelligence; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; ability to operate a desktop or mobile data terminal and other related equipment during the course of their work.

General Duties - Provide computer information to officers requesting checks through the use of N.C.I.C. and the DELJIS computer system. Operations of the police department's base radios. Answering telephone calls for police, fire, and ambulance service; direct emergency service units during calls for assistance from the public or other public safety agencies; monitor closed circuit security cameras located throughout the facility; provide assistance to patrol and administrative personnel as needed
